I was in my studio the other day with two other friends when all of sudden one of them picks up a G-string off their work desk? I laughed asking what the hell is a g-string doing there! "It's not a g-string, it's a merkin! This girl in our class made merkins for everyone as an art piece", my friend says. What?? What the hell is a Merkin? " A Vagina wig!", she tells me.My other friend then exclaims to me, "A merkin, you know! It's big in Japan and everywhere else around the world...except here in North America, I guess".
I was so confused, for years I've heard of people shaving their pubic hair in certain designs, shaving it all off, or even growing them into massive bushes-but never had I heard of merkin wigs! They both continued to explain what this merkin was to me, finding out that the merkin originally came about because people wanted to get rid of the pubic lice problem thing. So to do this, they would shave or trim their pubic hair but wear a merkin over top.
But a merkin now, is more like a fashion statement-even a trend. You could find them stylized in different designs, patterns and even colours.
There it was, dangling in front of my face in my friend's hand, designed like a black and white cow patch of hair (I'm assuming synthetic?). Of course I had to google this up once i got home and guess what...merkins aren't always made of hair. Some are made of other animal hairs, leather, plastic, and even bizarrely fish scales. But whatever they're made of, I'm still very intrigued by all of this. The world of merkins have finally open itself to me!
