Androgynous People & Fashion

Today on the bus I overheard a girl cry out to her friend "ugh, androgynous people disgusts me!". I was appalled but I continued to ease drop anyways. She continues to her friend about this other friend who all of sudden had her hair cut short short, dyed black and now goes everywhere with a tie. " I don't get it! Why would you want to dress like a guy" she concluded.

Now for those of you who aren't familiar with androgyny, the def. is in terms of gender identity, is a person who does not fit cleanly into the typical masculine and feminine gender roles of their society. They may also use the term ambigender to describe themselves. Many androgynes identify as being mentally "between" woman and man, or as entirely genderless. They may class themselves as non-gendered, genderneutral, agendered, between genders, Intergendered, bigendered or, genderfluid.

I've always been one to have and wear androgynous fashion. I love it! I never minded looking or acting either masculine and feminine. I love high fashion specifically and everyday embody the metro sexual look of a guy mixed in with the glamor girl. I find if you restrict yourself to a gender look-you conform to that look and limit yourself to all the possibilities of fashion. Also just a note to all you fashion lovers..to be a true high fashion fan you definitely have to love the concept of androgyny on the cat-walk and on the body!

It was in my Advertising class, my TA displayed an Ad (as seen to the left) with androgynous models. She asked the class, 'who here find androgynous people sexy and beautiful?'. I of course held my hand up and as I looked around my class, to my surprise only 5 others also had their hands up. But all 6 of us including myself had something in common...we were the only LGQTB of the class.

Of course androgyny is still regarded the "un-norm" as such with gay people also. But now having advertising and major fashion designers like Gucci and Karl Lagerfeld embrace the androgynous and queer look...people are now taking a second look at this masculine + feminine style!
