This past Saturday, Toronto Star published an article written by Robert Cribb, "Making A Case For Men' Studies". In his article he interviewed Lionel Tiger, an anthropology teacher at Rutger's University in New Jersey. With the hype and even controversy right now over eliminating Women's Studies and transforming it into Gender Studies instead, here we have another group of people who are proposing a course specifically devoted to the studies of men. Well, what would you learn in a course like that? For Tiger, he states, "The over-powering orthodoxy of men's studies is that if you're male, you're bad or in need of remedy...the courses [however] are structured in order to try to make boys not boys". If the course is put in place, it might allow boys to understand and learn how their mentality works, how they behave and react to certain situations and even in understanding what masculinity is. One of the main reasons, Men's Studies is being stressed for, is due to the drop-out and graduating rates in school between boys and girls. Currently, more girls than boys are graduating highschool, giving girls an advantage in furthering their education and career. For boys though, there is a concern that the lack of graduating boys from high-school might be due to a lack of specific-geared courses for their gender-in this case, Men's Studies. It was a very interesting article and one that you should read! To see the full article by Robert Cribb, click this link: http://www.thestar.com/living/article/811249--a-case-for-men-s-studies
